Graycliff Conservancy Receives $145,000 in State Funding

Governor George E. Pataki recently announced nearly $3.2 million in grants from the Clean Water Air Bond Act and Environmental Protection Fund.  The Graycliff Conservancy was one of 27 projects in eight New York counties to receive this state funding, with a grant in the amount of $145,000 toward an ambitious plan to restore the Servant Apartment and Garage, Reroof the Main House and repair the Chimney.

Senator Dale M. Volker has been instrumental in helping Graycliff's restoration to move ahead, first securing $40,000 in Local Initiative funding from the 1999-2000 New York State Budget and more recently supporty the Conservancy's request for funding from the Clean Water Clean Air Bond Act.  "I'm proud to assist the efforts of the Graycliff Conservancy," said Senaor Dale Volker (R-C, Depew).  "This funding will help to restore and preserve buildings that have fallen to nature's elements and the hands of time."

The Servant Apartment and Garage, the Chimney and the Roofts on the Main House have suffered from lack of maintenance.  A 1950s addition to the original garage interrupted the natural flow of surface runooff, causing wide-spread, moisture-related deterioration to the entire Estate.  This change in runoff was especially detrimental to the Servant House and Garage, accelerating the extensive damage which currently exists, to the point where prompt action is necessary.  For both the Main House and Garage, there is a lack of adequate attic ventilation and no ventilation under the cantilevered balcony decks, which allows warm air from the heated spaces of the house to move i nto the unheated cantilevered areas.  The resulting condensation has cuased wood rot, damage to the interior stucco and structural problems.  There is also dramatic cracking of the stone facing on the Chimney and the flashing has leaked all around.
