Five Stars for Frank Lloyd Wright's Graycliff in New Guidebook

April 10, 2006

A new guidebook that encompasses all extant buildings designed by noted architect Frank Lloyd Wright– nationally and internationally–has given Graycliff a ranking of five stars out of five possible stars.

Frank Lloyd Wright Field Guide-includes All United States and International Sites by Thomas A. Heinz was published by Northwestern University Press this spring.

The highest ranking that Graycliff received was one of only 24 awarded, out of a total of 386 listings (some for multiple sites.)  Among the other sites to also receive five stars are Taliesin and Taliesin West (properties that Wright designed for his own use,) the Darwin D. Martin House, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Fallingwater, perhaps Wright’s most famous design for a dwelling.  Graycliff is a precursor to Fallingwater.

The two-page description of Graycliff includes two photographs, a brief history of the property and a description.  As with all properties listed, a map, directions and Global Positioning System coordinates are included as well.  The 528 page volume is the first comprehensive international guide to both public and private Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. Arranged geographically, the useful guidebook provides brief histories of the buildings and clients, information on viewing, and driving directions.

Thomas Heinz is the author of over thirty books on Wright, including (to list just a few) The Life and Works of Frank Lloyd Wright (2002;) Frank Lloyd Wright's Stained Glass & Lightscreens (2005;)   The Vision of Frank Lloyd Wright (2005;) and Frank Lloyd Wright's Interiors  (2002.)
